The later printings state First Edition Second (or Third or Fourth, etc.) Impression. See Albert F. Blakeslee "John Belling", chapter 16 in Clark and Kasten, History of Staining, third edition. Quoting Blakeslee, Belling "perfected the aceto-carmine method of staining by the addition of iron which rendered possible a clear differentiation between chromosomes and cytoplasm. What a single method in stain technic may mean to the development of a science would be realized if a moratorium for a year should be declared on Belling's iron-aceto-carmine method and its various later modifications.
