Early paper by Thompson, later Sir Henry Thompson, 1st Baronet, the leading Victorian specialist in genito-urinary surgery and often described as the first English urologist, who devoted most of his practice to diseases of the lower urinary tract and the bladder. Here he treats â spermatorrhÅ"aâ â " then understood as involuntary or excessive seminal loss, blamed for physical and nervous debility â " by local cauterisation of the urethra with nitrate of silver, applied to a circumscribed area using a specially designed urethral instrument. Thompson details the construction and use of this instrument, made for him by James Coxeter, surgical instrument maker to University College and Middlesex Hospitals, 23 Grafton Street, East, Fitzroy Square, London, exemplifying the collaboration between an emerging genito-urinary specialist and a leading London instrument maker in the heyday of â spermatorrhÅ"aâ treatments. ; 20.2 x 13.3 cms; 8 pages.
