First edition. This novel, completed by Norris in 1895 (it was written almost simultaneously with McTEAGUE), was not published until twelve years after his death. The unrevised manuscript, in storage and presumed destroyed in a warehouse fire following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, was edited by Charles G. Norris.
