About this Item
Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-ix [x] [1-2] 3-354 [355: printer's imprint] [356-358: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original terra cotta cloth, front panel stamped in gold and ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. This novel, completed by Norris in 1895 (it was written almost simultaneously with McTEAGUE), was not published until twelve years after his death. The unrevised manuscript, in storage and presumed destroyed in a warehouse fire following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, was edited by Charles G. Norris. The novel, influenced by the writings of Zola, ". details a man's mental disintegration till he lives and acts like a wolf." - Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 139. "A landmark work of macabre fiction . One of the grimmest, most terrifying accounts of the moral degeneration of a soul ever penned, it documents the gradual descent into madness of a fine, sensitive young man, who becomes so deranged that he imagines he has been physically transformed into a wolf and runs naked on all fours about his room howling 'wolf, wolf!'" - Frost, The Essential Guide to Werewolf Literature, p. 97. BAL 15046. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 N-129. Baird and Greenwood, An Annotated Bibliography of California Fiction 1664-1970 1883. Cloth rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, a bright, very good copy. (#170162). Seller Inventory # 170162
