Binding somewhat rubbed; title page with older owner's stamp; else about very good. First edition of this attempt to present and answer moral questions mathematically. Misley (1761?ca. 1840), who practiced as a doctor in Graz but also taught philosophy at the university, interpreted Kant's theoretical and practical philosophy as the foundation for making what Kant called the noumenon ? that which is thought but cannot be perceived by the senses ? graphically, diagrammatically visible with the help of mathematics ? in Misley's words translated here: ?how and under what visible gestalts those gestaltless objects treated in metaphysics could now finally be represented in a map with the application of mathematics (.) How can gestaltless objects be viewed mathematically (.)? (p. 16). He mentions the questionable premise of this anti-hermeneutic endeavor in a footnote: ?(.) theoretical and practical metaphysics, and consequently the whole of discursive philosophy, is here already assumed to be completely accomplished (.)? (p. 16). Ultimately, as Misley goes on to explain, metaphysics should be overcome by being completely absorbed into mathematics; Misley calls this mathematics ?total ground mathesis? Consequently, this endeavor ultimately led Misley away from Kant and back to Plato's Timaeus and his view that the laws of the macrocosm are reflected analogously in the microcosm, which was influential until modern times. It is therefore not surprising that Misley returns to the form of the circle diagram.
