A C White's Christmas series volume XXXVIII with Christmas greetings tipped in. (Betts: 31-16) First edition. White's introduction discusses this area of problem strategy (Valve: where a move, made by black, opens one line and closes another, both affected lines being black; bi-valves: where the lines affected radiate from two black pieces instead of one). 139 examples follow (51 two-movers, 85 three-movers, 3 four-movers) with full solutions. Includes and index of composers. Condition: Spine and edges heavily sunned, previous owner's pictorial chess book plate on front paste down, marginalia and stamps, lightly soiled, hinges lightly rubbed else a very good copy.
