A smart first edition of this three volume autobiography from British writer Herbert Ernest Bates, with illustrations. Complete in three volumes. First edition. Illustrated throughout. The autobiography of Herbert Ernest Bates, a British writer, known for his gritty realistic short stories and novels. He was from the countryside and adored flowers and gardening (writing two books on gardening), with much of his writing being informed by this. Illustrated by John Stanton Ward, an English portrait artist, landscape painter and illustrator. This set contains: The Vanished World, 1969. A deeply nostalgic book, recounting the author's childhood up until the publication of his first novel The Two Sisters, in 1926. The Blossoming World, 1971. A record of the author's life with record of further publications and his experiences in the inter-war period. The World in Ripeness, 1972. Beginning with the author's joining of the R.A.F. in 1941 as the first writer to be commissioned by the Armed Forces solely to write short stories, to his interests after the war. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Original dust wrappers are unclipped other than The Blossoming World which has been price-clipped. Wrappers are very smart with minor wear to the extremities and light sunning to the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Fine.…
