About this Item

Description:

Vesaliae Clivorum: Andreae ab Hoogenhuysen, 1670. First Edition Thus. Three volumes in one; thick 12mo (20cm.); full contemporary parchment, manuscript spine title; [48],510,[16],604,[50],78pp. (collated complete); added engraved titles pages, one folding plate, text engravings throughout. A few tiny old soil spots to parchment, corners tapped, tiny hole mid leaf 2F8 affecting illustration and very brief text, early 20th century armorial ex libris to front pastedown, else a Very Good or better, remarkably fresh and sound copy, adorned with engravings after the Flemish painter Paulus van Somer. Bound with, as usual, Godeschalcus Steewech's "Commentarius" and Petrus Scriverius' "Correctionum." Splendid not-quite-pocket-sized edition of the major history of Roman warfare by the Late Latin author Vegetius (fl. 5th century). The work became hugely influential during the Middle Ages as a handbook of chivalry, with emphasis on training, rewards of merit, and other concepts that appealingly transcended class. This edition extensively held in libraries throughout Europe, but by U. Iowa only in the United States as of January, 2024 per OCLC, described without the latter two volumes.
