First edition of the author's first book, 2 vols., 4to, pp. [iii]xvi, 530, [1]; [iii]-vii, [1], 654, [1]; bound without half-titles in contemporary full calf with large blindstamped arabesques central on all covers, gilt and blindstamped rolls at the borders, gilt-decorated spines. black morocco labels; joints cracked, some edge wear and minor rubbing but generally a good, sound set, or better. The book "immediately established Hallam's reputation" (DNB) and the book was consulted by Malthus in compiling his Principles of Population.
