1873 FIRST PRINTING of First Edition (single volume version of the ALPINE SERIES, not the Eastern Series; the book was also published at the same time with the eastern and alpine volumes bound under one cover with same cover design as the single volume covers). The book measures 335mm tall x 244mm, and has pages: blank FFEP (all pages have blank versos) + title + preface + half title + list of views + 12 color plates with following three page sequence for each (blank gaurd sheet + plate sheet on card mount + descriptive text sheet) + page of ads for Walton?s other books (Flowers From The Upper Alps third edition, The Coast Of Norway second edition, Vignettes: Alpine And Eastern) + blank RFEP. ORIGINAL maroon cloth boards, elaborate gilt stamped decoration and titles on front cover, five stamped borders rear cover with vine and leaf pattern in middle frame, AEG. rebacked with identical matching spine material with gilt lettering and rules, no trimming to pages. CONDITION: COMPLETE with all pages and plates. ORIGINAL pale yellow coated end-pages, previous owner name penned to the front paste-down and previous owner bookplate on front paste-down, no other owner marks or writing on any other pages, no dampstaining, solid binding (these always are rebound because the book was originally published with a glued binding and not sewn, so when the glue dries from age, all pages break loose), small foxing spots on the Lofotens Midnight Sun plate, otherwise all other plates fine or near fine on the image but may have small foxing spots in margins or on mount page, the Lofotens mount has some chipping to the bottom edge of the card with loss up to 1cm deep and the Worther See mount has some rubbing on edges of the card and a tiny bit of loss on part of the bottom edge, all other card edges are not worn or damaged, the book cover has one small faint 7mm diameter spot near the lower front corner and there is a tiny bit of fading rear cover near the upper outside corner, otherwise the covers are remarkably clean and fresh with no rubbing or soiling.
