A densely interesting book of six essays by Keith Ansell Pearson about "the future of the human", combatively written and entertainingly opinionated, remarking, for example, after quoting some of the dreadful Heidegger's thoughts about bees, "Heidegger moves from anthropocentric prejudice to bad biology". Nietzsche's speculations, by contrast, "contain a radical and far-reaching overturning of such anthropocentric naivety". Ok, you think, tell me more. The book itself is still tightly bound, and largely clean: there are five spindly marginal lines and underlinings and one marginal tick in the Introduction, and 21 spindly marginal lines and underlinings in Chapter 6, mostly just picking out one, two or three words or sitting alongside two, three or four lines. There's a bit of spotting around the edges of the pages, and some very minor bumping and rubbing around the edges of the covers (just odd millimetres). Overall, still very good.

Inspired by this vision, Keith Ansell Pearson sets out to examine if evolution is 'out of control' and machines are taking over.
In a series of six fascinating perspectives, he links Nietzsche's thought with the issues at stake in contemporary conceptions of evolution from the biological to the technological. Viroid Life; Perspectives on Nietzsche and the Transhuman Condition considers the hybrid, 'inhuman' character of our future with the aid of Nietzsche's philosophy. Keith Ansell Pearson contrasts Nietzsche and Darwin before introducing the more recent figures such as Giles Deleuze and Guy Debord to sketch a new thinking of technics and machines and stress the ambiguous character of our 'machine enslavement'.

Keith Ansell Pearson is Senior Lecturer and Director of Graduate Research at the University of Warwick. He is the author of Nietzsche contra Rousseau and An Introduction to Nietzsche as a Political Thinker.

Store Description

Wild & Homeless Books has been trading from 12 South Street, Bridport, Dorset since February 2009. The current mismanagement team, who have been involved with the shop pretty much since opening, have been sitting in the big chair since Bastille Day 2016 and now have about 60 years of book trade experience between them in one form or another. The shop itself is situated on two floors of a listed (and listing) building in Bridport's town square and contains a ridiculous number (according to our surveyor) of secondhand books. We try to carry a good general stock and do not specialise as such, although we're on reasonably good ground when it comes to Railways and Cricket. We are also stockists of Wild Swan railway titles, now being published in Bath by Simon Castens, owner of the Titfield Thunderbolt transport bookshop. We are, by and large, open for business Monday to Saturday between 9.30 and 4.30, and are closed Sundays and Bank Holidays. We are occasionally closed due to ill-health, parenting responsibilities, Test Matches, and the phases of the moon. Please check if travelling specifically to visit. All of this rich pageant is watched over by a larger than life-sized print of Audrey Hepburn and a semi-sentient 1950s valve radio called The Behemoth.
