About this Item
First edition printed. Octavo. 36pp. Stapled dark gray-green wrappers printed in gold on front cover. Staples a bit oxidized, moderate crease on front cover and front flyleaf, else a fine copy, with the covers bright, text fresh and clean. Memoir by the author Julia C.R. Dorr of her father, William Young Ripley ["W.Y R."]. "An account is given of his ancestors, the main portion of the pamphlet consisting, however, of his daughter's recollections of him and of the events of her own life, written in an agreeable style. Paper and print are good, margins wide" [see *New England Historical and Genealogical Register* January, 1902, p.221]. Julia Caroline Ripley Dorr (1825-1913), was born in Charleston, South Carolina. Her father, William Young Ripley, a native of Vermont, was one of the first to develop the Rutland marble quarries. Dorr, a poet and novelist, was published widely in prominent periodicals of the day. Her first novel, *Farmingdale,* (1854) was published under the pen name, "Caroline Thomas." She published several other novels, including *Lanmere* (1856); *Sibyl Huntingdon* (1869), *Expiation* (1872), and at least 10 volumes of poetry. "Her heroines who apply themselves to their educational opportunities and thus rise above their impoverished beginnings, offered role models to young, poor and uneducated girls" [Blain. *Feminist Companion to Literature in English,* p.302]. *OCLC* locates nine copies. Nicely printed, on watermarked paper, with wide margins, presumably in a small quantity, "for private circulation only.".
