Synopsis

Dust-jacket Wasdale is one of the least known but best loved of the Lake District valleys. Within its boundaries are to be found England's highest mountain and deepest lake, one of its smallest churches and, so tradition has it, its biggest liar. The author maintains that we should add to the list of superlatives 'England's most beautiful valley'. This is not a guide book but a collection of words and pictures about the valley, its inhabitants and its traditions. Much of the source material is out of print, rare to the point of unattainable, and without access to the shelves of Michael Moon's Antiquarian Bookshops and the Cumbria County Archives, the author could not have assembled such a varied selection of words and images. There is a danger inherent in the celebration of a particular the very beauties praised may be imperilled by exposure to a wider public. The author fervently hopes that by omitting recommended itineraries and favoured routes, and by keeping some of the valley's secrets unrevealed, her book will not precipitate an invasion. The future of the valley is currently in doubt, not due to the pressures of tourism (thanks to the unending efforts of the National Trust) but to the demands of the nuclear power industry. There is a plea between every line of this book that we should acknowledge the importance of protecting our most beautiful areas from any encroachment, for whatever reason.
