1st 1955. Very good condition in an almost very good dustwrapper. The author's attempts at the water speed record, the greatest success story of any young Englishman since the war. Blue cloth boards, gilt title to spine. B/w photos. Spine browned with a few foxspots, gilt title faded. Top edge of boards lightly faded. Minor foxing to text block. Contents clean. Pictorial dustwrapper is edge creased with a closed tear to top front corner, spine faded, rear panel scuffed. Packaged with care and promptly dispatched!. Seller Inventory # 1823858

The author is the son of Sir Malcolm, from whom he inherited the first version of Bluebird - both father and son were speed merchants. Both enjoyed Leo Villa as mechanic. By 1964 the author would hold world speed records for both land and water. These 239 pages tell of his speed trial on Ullswater in 1955 where he achieved 205 mph. Unthinkable at the time. TEXT assisted by 32 b/w photos and one map. Learn more about : Lake Coniston, spray-baffles, skin friction, Betty Colley Reid Railton, and Povey Cross. Cond : Boards are blue with gilt lettering - spine only. All edges have light wear. D.J. is missing. End-papers are white. No tears, names nor marks. B/W frontispiece has been re-glued. Spine half-cocked but binding sound. Minimal soiling. EXCELLENT reading copy. Quote (p. 47) : " With the exception of Verneuk Pan, Harry joined father's team for every attempt on the world speed record. Interesting fact: The page facing the title page has a black and white photo of the author, Leo Villa, and his large black dog, referred to as a 'labradoodle' This is 1955. I didnt think the term was in existence then.
