First Printing, one of 2,750 copies. Octavo (21.5cm); red cloth, with titling and decorative elements in navy blue on spine and front cover; dark blue topstain; dustjacket; [vi],256,[2]pp. Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped (priced $2.00), with a hint of sunning to spine, and a few very tiny tears. A sharp copy of Cheever's first book, a collection of 30 short stories written between 1930-1942, with several of them previously published in the pages of Collier's, The New Yorker, Story Magazine, Yale Review, and Harper's Bazaar. While the book was critically well-received, it was a poor seller. Cheever (and later, his family) was persistently resistant to allowing the stories here to be included in subsequent collections of his work. Seller Inventory # 6181
