292 pp, 8 7/16" H. "(An) autobiography, written from the viewpoint of an English girl who had never been on a farm until the day she arrived in Canada. The scene is a remote rural community (Fenn) in Alberta. She writes of blizzards and hired hands, of killing work and low prices - and of the rewards of a farmer's life." Winner of a $1,000 price for the best work of non-fiction by a Canadian citizen.Tells the story of Harry and Kathleen Strange, who arrived in Fenn, Alberta in 1920 as complete novices to farms and farming but, through hard work and perseverance, had, within three years, won "the World's Wheat Championship at the Chicago International Grain Exposition" and went on to "build up a seed farm and a reputation for producing good seed that made us known from one end of agricultural Canada to another". Light browning to pastedown endpapers, moderate browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, scuff on spine/front hinge, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, lean to spine, bottom 1 1/2" of spine has discolouration - faded due to piece missing from dust jacket, small piece missing from bottom edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has edge wear/wrinkling/creasing, light browning on spine and flap-folds, several edge tears with creases, two large pieces missing - one at bottom of front panel and the other at the bottom of the spine and part of rear panel, small piece missing at top of rear panel, old tape along the inside top and bottom edges - old tape also covers the large chips (see pictures).
