Peter Dwight Whitney [1916-1991] was an itinerant journalist, war correspondent and activist in civic causes who worked at several newspapers, including the San Francisco Examine, the San Francisco Chronicle, New York Times, London Observer and Chicago Sun. He was a descendant of Josiah Dwight Whitney, who mapped the High Sierra, including its highest peak, Mt. Whitney, which was named after him. He was educated at Yale and was an avid white-water kayaker, his favorite pastime and a sport he took up in the 1940s. He ran many of the rivers in the West, the Mountain States, and the Far West. In France Whitney learned at first hand the new revolutionary advances in the techniques of paddling kayaks and canoes. These methods, along with the river lore and experience he has acquired over the years, are set forth in this book, the first complete one in English on this sport. He was founding chairman of the Kayak and Canoe Club of New York and a member of the American White Water Affiliation, as well as Editor of its quarterly American White Water. [some info from the dust jacket] A "must have" for any serious kayaker or white-water fan.
