Henry Vizetelly (1820-1894) was a journalist and publisher whose "first serious exposure to wine came in 1869 when he was commissioned by the Pall Mall Gazette to write a series of articles on the french vintage.". Vizetelley was livingin Paris when the Franco-Prussian war broke out, was captured and only narrowly escaped execution. Following the war he took up residence outside of Paris and resumed [his] "studies of the more famous wines of the world and every succeeding au;tumn for the next half dozen years. I visited scores of celebrated vineyards in Champagne, the center and south of France, along the Rhine and Mosell and in the Palatinate.'.". He was a true scholar of wine and especially of the sparkling wines of France. "Even Vizetelly, for all his research and devotion to Champagne, could not answer the perennial question: 'Who invented sparkling Champagne?". (Gabler).
