On 6 May 1866 the GENERAL GRANT, a full-rigged three-masted American ship bound for Britain via Cape Horn, sailed form Melbourne carrying 83 souls and a miscellaneous cargo that included, according to the ship's manifest, 2,500 ounces of gold.
