Twenty volumes of the celebrated, subscription-only, art-history publication from the Walpole Society. Comprising of volumes I (1911-1912), III (1913-1914), V (1915-1917), IX (1920-1921), XIV (1925-1926), XV (1926-1927), XIX (1930-1931) , XXI (1932-1933), XXXI (1942-1943), XXXIV (1952-1954), XXXVI (1956-1958), XXXVIII (1960-1962), XLI (1966-1968) , XLII (1968-1970), XLIV (1972-1974), XLV (1974-1976), XLVI (1976-1978), XLVIII (1980-1982), XLIX (1983) and XL (1984). The Walpole Society itself was formed in 1911 to promote the study of British art history. The society is named after Horace Walpole, the first to publish a history of art in Britain, based on the manuscript notebooks of George Vertue which was the most important source concerning pre-18th century British art. The annual magazine volume comprises of articles, biographies and studies written by its members and worldwide scholars on the various subjects. Contents includes paintings, drawings, prints, miniatures, sculpture and illuminated manuscripts. This work covers the history of British art from the Middle Ages to present. In original quarter cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of spine as well as to the extremities. Bumping to the extremities. Rear hinge to volume I is strained but firm. Front hinge to volume XXXIV is tightly bound. Rubbing to the paper covered boards to volumes V, XXXIV, XXXVI, resulting in some loss. Slight warping to the front board to volume XIV. Marks to the rear board of volume XXXVIII. Fading to the gilt at spines. Browning to the spines of volumes XIX, XXI. Small loss to the head and tail of spine to volume XXI. Label from a previous bookseller to the rear board to volumes XXXI, XXXVIII. Bumping to the extremities of volume XXXI. Bookplate to the front pastedown of voluimes I, III, V, IX 'Studio'. Bookplate to front pastedown of volume XIX, Eric Paul Baker. Internally, binding to volume I is strained. Otherwise, most volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Organic matter to the verso of front endpaper and to the title page of volume I. Cockling to pages of volume XIV. Scattered spots to pages, heavier to the first and last few pages. Several gatherings to volume XV remain uncut at the top edge. Worming to the last few pages to volume XV at the bottom outer edge, not affecting text. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 588L25
