"This is the book John James Audubon would have made if he had used a camera. It is a spectacular collection of the world's most beautiful waterbirds, celebrating both those oceanic wanderers that live at sea, coming onto land only to breed, as well as those shorebirds and so-called colonial nesters that live on land but are almost always found near water. Traveling over four continents - across tundra and through unforgiving marshes - Theodore Cross has spent the past forty years in the company of birds. Driven by a profound respect and admiration for these beautiful and bewitching creatures, Cross has trekked to some of the most austere and remote islands on earth to photograph uklets, egrets, herons, terns, and sanderlings, among others. What resulted is a remarkable collection of photographs taken at moments of peak action - including active courtship, landing on a perch, engaged in aerial acrobatics, warfare with other birds, plunge diving, threat displays, and mating dances. The images are accompanied by graceful written field notes and fascinating accounts of the birds' habits and habitat, as well as the insights and observations of an extraordinary man who, at eighty-five, is as eager to track down an eagle in Alaska as he was when he began photographing in midlife." - from the inner front jacket flap.
