The very scarce first edition of this detailed account of Wellington's successes in the Peninsula War, illustrated throughout with folding maps. The very scarce first edition of Captain Lewis Butler's two volume study of the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley's, operations in the Peninsula War of the early nineteenth century, between the years 1808 and 1814.Illustrated with thirteen maps to volume I, and fourteen to volume II, many of which are folding. Collated, complete.Providing a detailed account of Wellington's movements in this stage of the Napoleonic wars in chronological order, this work recounts, in the words of the author, 'the story of the most successful campaigns ever waged by the British Army'.With volume II previously held by the 'Officers' Mess Library of the British Army of the Rhine', with their stamp to the front free endpaper, and a stamp reading 'Supplied for the Public Service' to the title page. With evidence of library number removal to back strip tail of this volume, and no further library markings. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Bumping to back strip heads and tails. Significant discolouration to tail of volume II back strip. Small split in cloth to head of volume II front joint. Light fading to front and rear board of volume II.
