The introduction is followed by a meta-analytic review on the effectiveness of European worksite health promotion programs. From this review it is concluded that the few (quasi-) experimental effect-studies which have been conducted as yet, differ substantially in the interventions applied and outcome measures used. Until recently worksite health promotion programs have mainly focused on the promotion of healthy behaviors and the reduction of health risks. The present study however, is in addition to these features also aimed at improving working conditions. Health education sessions were implemented and supported by changes in the environment. In line with the Dutch law on working conditions, the content and organization of work were screened and adapted. These changes were implemented in order to avoid stressors at work and to increase decision latitude. Results are described in relation to Karasek and Theorell's (1990) Demand - Control - Support model which is used for relating working conditions to consequences of work such as job satisfaction, stress reactions, and absenteeism. This study shows that the total wellness-health promotion program was effective in establishing improvements in working conditions and decreases in sick leave related absenteeism. -- Contents: 1.
