Light edge-wear with some tape reinforcement to the spine ends and upper corners to the verso. The wrapper artwork by 'MHBJ' remains striking in the removable Brodart archival over. ''What to Eat and Drink in France', has been written primarily for the use of visitors to France, to enable them to choose the typical local dishes and wines that are most characteristic of each Province. What is also hoped is that it will prove valuable to all interested in the culinary art. Never before attempted in a work of this description. The author has not given actual recipes, but the ingredients and characteristics of dishes, sweets, confectionery, and beverages - information that is too often unknown to waiters and butlers in the best of restaurants'. The author writing in 1931 states: ' it may at times be found that some of the most characteristic recipes are not included in the menus of restaurants. They has been a tendency in recent years to forget these delightful old dishes, but they are still the best, and the tourist who, instructed by this book, asks of the dishes of his own selection, will not only ensure delight for himself, but will bring back to the French restaurant tour the realisation that in her wonderful old recipes France has a treasure that she should jealously preserve. .' (Notes are partially taken from the preface and introduction). An increasingly elusive title. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
