The Baltimore Orioles' skipper is equally forthright on inept umpires (including one who stole a World Series game from him), league officials (including AL President Lee MacPhail, whom Earl charges with ignorance of the rules of baseball), and the team owners "who tried to destroy the Player's Association." The book, like the man, is both feisty and funny, full of stories about such protean personalities as Jim Palmer, Reggie Jackson, Billy Martin, George Steinbrenner, and the inimitable Earl Williams ("I don't think he ever ran out a ground ball, but we won two division titles with him"), as well as all of his great players including Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson, and Boog Powell. Weaver is also candid about himself, telling about the time he faked a heart attack on the field to make a point with the umpires, about the time he ordered an intentional walk with the bases loaded, and about his numerious battles with his own players, whom he allows to say whatever they want about him.
