The authors--2 psychologists & a sociologist--report on their in-depth examination of a group of "Seekers" (later known as "Rapturists") in Lake City & Collegeville, Pennsylvania, led by a suburban housewife, "Mrs. Marion Keech," who claimed to have been contacted by "superior beings from the planet Clarion" prophesying the Rapture, which they believed would commence with a great flood--which never came to pass. The scientists' focus was on explaining how deeply entrenched religious beliefs can become & how they are maintained even in the face of evidence to the contrary.
