First English-language edition (first printing). 8vo. 212pp. Original publisher's boards lettered in silver at the spine. Small dealer plate to the base of the front pastedown, and a tiny area of Tip-Ex-ing (?!) to the tip of the front free endpaper to obscure a former dealer price. A very good copy in very slightly toned non-price-clipped dust wrapper. The author's first work of fiction, comprising five lengthy interwoven short stories. Completed in 1937, the book was rejected by various publishers and set aside. It was eventually published in Paris in 1979 with this Patrick O'Brian English-translation appearing three years later.
