About this Item
Mrs Foreman Lewis began her writing career with "Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze" (1932), also illustrated by the excellent Kurt Wiese, which was the winner of the 1933 Newbery Medal. With that, and the subsequent five books, she told the story of China from 1930 to 1942, giving each novel a good strong plot, not overly burdened with history lessons, but providing young readers with much information on Chinese social life and customs. With this sixth book in the series there is a pronunciation guide and notes at rear, and some terrific work by Kurt Wiese. Both he and the author lived in China for many years so they both know of what they write and illustrate. Here, we have a lovely color frontispiece, ten full page drawings, chapter headings and tail pieces, endpapers and - of course - the jacket, by the German born artist. Published in the UK by Harrap two years later, but this is the true first edition. The edges of the textblock are slightly browned and there is just a hint of wear to extremities. but really, for 1942, this is a near fine copy in a very good dust jacket with slight rubbing, a little wear at extremities, one tear at base of spine and a some fairly minor chipping and loss at spine ends. Very nice copy of a pretty scarce and interesting children's book. Seller Inventory # 000767
