TOLSTOY, Leo. [DOLE, Nathan Haskell, translator]. Where Love Is There God Is Also. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., Publishers, 1887. First American Edition in English. Small octavo (8vo). Unpaginated; publisher’s advertisement at rear. Publisher’s original white morocco, the front board lettered and decorated with floral tooling in silver and gilt. A slender, finely produced presentation-format issue. One of Tolstoy’s best-known Christian parables, recounting the story of the cobbler Martin Avdeitch, who discovers that acts of compassion toward those in need constitute service to God. Presented here in Nathan Haskell Dole’s early English translation. Contents clean, bright, and unmarked. Binding remains sound and square. Light rubbing to the exterior and minor shelf wear at the spine crown; silver and gilt decoration remains attractive. A Very Good copy. [Attributes: First American Edition; Hard Cover; Leather Bound.].
