In English. Apparent First Edition of this English edition (NAP, 1956 on the title page). This is a rare book. In fact, I can't find another for sale anywhere on the Internet. A second edition was published in 1960 and the third in 1964. This book came directly from the library of the former Assistant Secretary War and US High Commissioner of Postwar Germany, John J. McCloy. However, he did not sign his name in the book or make any markings. The book is in very nice condition. Most importantly, it is very solidly bound. If you look at the last page you'll see number 114, but that's only a section at the end of the book titled Directory of Organizations, Associations and Institutions. The last page before that section is 1311. So 1425 pages before 5 pages (10 sides) of advertisements ends the book. As you can see from the photograph of the spine, this book is thick and whoever bound it knew that attention needed to be paid to it solidity. All the pages are nicely tightly bound, from cover to cover, and the covers themselves are nicely, tightly, bound as well. The covers have held up quite well. There's that one darkish line off the top edge. The red of the spine is also clearly lighter than that of the front and rear. The gilt lettering on the spine is still fairly bright. As to the small gilt decorations on the spine which number four, only one has retained its gilt. The cover edges are in very good shape, there are a few white specks on the rear bottom one and a tiny one on both the front and rear top edge. Both middle edges look perfect. Three of the four corners have just a speck of a spot of rub-through. The page edges are exceptionally clean. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any soiling at all. The pages are lightly, but uniformly toned. There is very, very little wear. Five consecutive pages have a tiny nick/indent at their middle edge, obviously far from the print, no tears. And I found two consecutive pages with a sliver of a crease crossing past their bottom corner, again not touching the print. I didn't see any placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. Seller Inventory # 004992
