Item description from seller

Good condition. Wear to book corners and edges. Sticky tape stains to front and back endpages. Previous owner has added a number to half-title page. Missing dust jacket. Book is in non-adhesive protective cover. Body text and binding are still good. This is the story of Captain Charles Sturt's epic journey down the Murrumbidgee and Murray Rivers to the sea and back again. It is the story of insurance and faith, in which the great explorer binds his party of soldiers and convicts with the closest ties of loyalty, and travels 2000 miles without one striking trouble From the numerous Aboriginal tribes. Firmly based on Sturt's own records of his journey, John Ewers' fictionalised account has all the appeal of a novel. The thoughts and feelings of the convicts so individually betrayed, the striking character of Debonair George Mccleay, and the selflessness and heroism of the leader himself, all emerged to give added significance to a great achievement in the exploration of Australia. (book flap) Illustrated by Elizabeth Durack.
