About this Item
Viii, 184 pp. Octavo. Chrome yellow and grey strips on the front cover, yellow and grey on the spine, solid yellow on the rear covers. Corners a little rubbed, especially the front bottom, small library numbers on the spine. Interior end papers have stamp from Ridgewood, NJ library (the town Hawes was from) , and marks from removed pocket at the rear. The first few preliminary leaves have a small bump at the fore-edge, otherwise clean and unmarked. A quite scarce book by one of the most interesting American women of the 20th century. Hawes was a designer yes -- an an opinionated one, who thought that women should have comfortable, affordable, well-made but stylish clothes -- but she was also a social critic, who thought long and hard of the role of art in the world and the responsibilities artists and craftspeople have to make the world a better place. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 184 pages.
