Over 200 letters on a wide range of topics. Garfield, a capable and ambitious teacher, preacher, and Ohio state senator joined the Union Army as an inexperienced lieutenant colonel early in the war, helped raise his regiment, and rose to major-general and national prominece by war's end. The letters, the majority written to his wife, fill gaps left in his personal journal, and remain a valuable primary source on the war and its leaders. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book; price-clipped jacket has a short tear, couple of minor dents, minor tanning to spine; flyleaf has a curious pink smudge & bit of stray thread. Text clean, no names or marks (the name on the endsheet is that of the cartographer); xx, 325 pages; b/w frontispiece, maps, index. Size: Octavo.
