About this Item

We Will Not Cease: The Autobiography of a Conscientious Objector By Archibald Baxter.

Published by The Caxton Press, Christchurch, 1968. First New Zealand Edition.

Softcover with French flaps.

This is an essential foundation text of New Zealand literature, pacifism, and wartime social history. Written by the father of iconic Kiwi poet James K. Baxter, this memoir details Archibald's harrowing, first-hand account of being forcibly transported to the Western Front and his brutal treatment by the New Zealand military machine during WWI.

While originally published in London in 1939, this scarce 1968 Caxton Press printing is the true first edition to be published on New Zealand soil, containing a custom added foreword by the author written shortly before his death.

Original card covers with fold-over French flaps. The spine is creased with chipping to the ends, binding firm, foxing to edges, very slight creasing.
Inner flaps are un-creased.
The pages are in Very Good condition, light foxing to first and last few pages and text block edges, minor marks.
Includes the iconic portrait frontispiece.
189 pages.

Archibald was a conscientious objector in World War One, and the father of the New Zealand poet James K. Baxter. "This day by day record of the sufferings, torments, anguishes and privations of a Conscientious Objector in World War I is as relevant today as when it was first published in 1939." - from blurb on front cover.
