Herman Charles Bosman wrote his second novel Willemsdorp in 1951 after he had moved into a new home in Lombardy East in Johannesburg. The setting is Pietersburg in 1947-48. He had attempted to write a novel on city life but had abandoned it, thinking that he would do a better job on life in a small town. He wrote 145 pages and then abandoned the attempt, starting on a second version which is published here for the first time. In her biography of Bosman, Sunflower to the Sun, Valerie Rosenberg writes as follows about Willemsdorp: "As he wrote his second attempt, Pietersburg seemed to come alive. There are no obvious devices such as a description of a landscape, a resurrection of the koppie or the grass.One simply knows one is in Pietersburg and knows the way a hutcher's shop smells and sounds, even when it is closed and silent.
