Wings. Insects. Birds. Men

Hardcover. First Edition. Wings, Insects, Birds and Men. No date but probably in the 1950's. Marks to cloth. Foxing to edge. Shelf wear to edge of D/J. Browning to back D/J. This is a rare and original work. The author's title is comprehensive and exact. Her book is about wings; about the wings of all forms of living creature, past and present, known to possess them, and about the wings which man has fashioned for himself during the several centuries in which he has challenged the air. Blanche Stillson sees the wing as a chief marvel of natural engineering, the infinitely adaptable agency of freedom and grace; as the apparatus that cancels gravity and becomes thereby the symbol pf release, power, inspiration, mobility and speed; at the occasion of man's boldest dreams and plans. This total vision of the wing is implicit in every paragraph, and all the fascinating wealth of deatail shapes the poetry, the powerful appeal to the imagination, the sense of adventure into a new world which compose the commanding impression of 'Wings'. Illustrations. 299 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences.
