Hemingway, Ernest. Winner Take Nothing. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. First edition, first printing. Octavo. In original publisher's board and original unclipped dust jacket. Housed in a custom slipcase that features a portrait of the author on the cover. Presented is a first edition printing of "Winner Take Nothing" by Ernest Hemingway. The book was published in New York by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1933. The first edition had a print run of approximately 20,000 copies. It is offered here bound in the publisher's black cloth boards, with gold paper title labels to upper board and spine printed in black, with the unclipped first issue dust jacket. This is the first edition of Hemingway's distinguished collection of 14 short stories, including some of his more celebrated poems: “A Natural History of the Dead,” “After the Storm,” and “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place.” Winner Take Nothing was the third and final collection of stories published by Hemingway. Thanks to this beloved collection, Hemingway secured his reputation as “the modern American master of the short story.” Hemingway’s “epigraph to Winner Take Nothing… is perhaps the finest and most accurate brief description of Hemingway’s heroes, of what he set out to do in his best work and what in the main he accomplished” (McCormick, 55-6). Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American author and journalist. His distinctive writing style, characterized by economy of words and dry understatement, strongly influenced 20th-century fiction, as did his life of adventure and his public image. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Bound in the publisher's black cloth boards, with gold paper title labels to upper board and spine printed in black. With unclipped first issue dust jacket. Wear to jacket, including cracking, splitting, and some loss to top and bottom of jacket spine, creasing and splitting and loss along top and bottom of front and back of jacket. Fading to white and orange on dust jacket. Dust jacket has been stabilized by a conservator and is protected in new mylar. Interior pages good, with only light toning. Top edge in red, as issued. Shipping terms
Our trained staff prepare, package, and ship all items bought online or in-store. We package framed items securely and safely to avoid damage during the shipping process. Our shipping rates are inclusive of specialty packaging for these fragile items, such as art boxes, and insurance during shipping. If damage occurs during shipment, please contact us at headquarters@great-republic.com and we will assist you in either replacing the damaged item, fixing it, or returning it for a full refund.
Items are shipped with Standard Ground via FedEx or UPS. Please allow 1-3 days for handling and 5-7 days for domestic shipping time.
Please be aware that additional fees may apply after the order is processed to accommodate international shipping insurance or handling, based on a case by case basis. The customer will be responsible for taxes and duties to be paid on the item upon its arrival in their home country.
Items are shipped with International Economy via FedEx or UPS. Please allow 1-3 days for handling. Shipping times will vary by destination.
