Quarto. Limited to only 200 copies. The present set is #180. with a manuscript leaf from the original working manuscript in Roosevelts' hand. This is the major work that helped establish Roosevelt's reputation as a serious historian before he became president. In four volumes, each volume with an engraved frontispiece, Roosevelt also wrote the forewords within each volume. The manuscript leaf pertains to the Indians which begins "says the indians have been pretty generally the aggressors since 1785". Volume I: xxvii, [3], 352; Volume II: vii, [3], 427; Volume III: ix, [3] 339; Volume IV: [3], 363p. plus five folding maps and 103 plates. All volumes beautifuly bound in full green crushed morocco by Putnam's, corner flourishes of a floral motif gilt, three raised bands with spine lettered and stamped in gilt, front and rear morocco doublures inset in red suede which is used for free end sheets as well, top edges gilt, some light scattered foxing thoughout the four volumes, spines have change to brown as usual with this set, the lower joints have been exquisitely repaired or streghnthened.
