Lettering and extensive decoration in gilt and black, all edges gilt. Title is on both front and back board Beautifully marbled end papers, with turn-ins showing and intricate pattern in gilt.4 Morocco is rubbed near corners. Solid hinges, tight and square; 6 X 8 1/2 inches, 55 pages. 8vo. A book of poetry produced for holiday giving containing the poetry of John Greenleaf Whittier, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, James Russell Lowell and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Illustrated with engravings from artists Winslow Homer, Harry Fenn, C.C. Griswold, W.J. Hennessy, S. Eytinge Jr. Homer D. Martin, Jervis McEntee, and Alfred Fredericks. With vignettes and ornaments by John J. Harley. Engraved by A.V.S. Anthony. The first poem was written by Whittier especially for this edition. Text block shows some foxing, particularly in first 15 pages and last 5. Early owner s name, Sarah P. Witherle, Castine, in neat ink script on first blank page along with light pencil notations of prior seller BC4-5. Seller Inventory # 2007-004
