First American Edition and 1st illustrated edition in publisher's red cloth covered boards, gilt and black lettered and with green and blind decorated snake on spine; Black, green and blind decorated shield and spears lettered in gilt on cover. 19 full page illustrations including the tissue guarded frontispiece by Charles Kerr. 16 pages of ads at rear. Scott 28A : Whatmore F20c. New York: Longmans, Green and Co., (1896), 293 pages. A nice VG copy with still deep red cloth. The spine is modestly toned and the cloth shows a few small spots of soil and wear. Cracked book block.
