I am pleased to offer a collection of essays and stories by Washington Irving, some said to be of his youth and featuring his lusty enthusiasm for the Hudson Valley and the Catskills (of the Rip Van Winkle & Sleepy Hollow genre of stories). Please find then: Wolfert s Roost and Other Papers, Now First Collected by Washington Irving. This small hard cover book (5 ½ x 7 ½ inches, 383 pages plus 12 pages of publisher s adverts about Irving s other works and those of his contemporaries) was published by G.P. Putnam s Sons of New York dated 1855 and apparently, the First American Edition. The book is bound in blind-stamped decorated boards with floral patterns and a gilt scene of the countryside on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. This particular copy is protected by a clear plastic dust jacket, doubtless something after-market. There are no illustrations except the Frontispiece and the title page. Condition: This book is in very good condition plus! Perhaps the plastic dust jacket has done its work over the decades. There has been some very light bumping to the corners and spine tips and the gilt titles and decorations are a bit muted. Inside there is a small, inked signature of a former owner on the first blank page but that is the only mark I found in the book. There is a four-page list of bookseller s wares tipped in before the title page. The interior pages are clean and bright and without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. This copy is in better condition than any I currently found online.…
