Paul Henri Benjamin Balluet dÕEstournelles de Constant, Baron de Constant de RebecqueÊ(1852 Ð 1924) was a diplomat, politician, and recipient of the 1909 Nobel Prize for Peace for his role in the development of international law and in organizing the Hague conferences of 1899 and 1907. He wrote the present work after a 1909 visit to the United States, where he gave three addresses at Stanford (Jordan, p. 324). The foreword explains that dÕEstournelles Òsomewhat unexpectedly to himself, became in California a convert to the principle of Equal Suffrage.Ó Octavo. 63 pp. With frontispiece. The text was first published as an essay in La Revue in December of 1911. Beginning with a laudatory discussion of womenÕs educational opportunities at Stanford University and other elite colleges, this work compares the Òenviable progressÓ of womenÕs rights in the United States with relative disenfranchisement in France. For example, the Nineteenth Amendment passed within a decade of the publication of the present work, but French women did not gain the right to vote until after WWII. Alexander Mitchell Robertson (1855 Ð 1934) began publishing under the A.M. Robertson and Company imprint in the late 1880s. The firm played a crucial role in San FranciscoÕs publishing industry until the 1930s. David Starr JordanÊ(1851ÊÐ 1931) was the founding president ofÊStanford University, serving from 1891 to 1913. He entertained dÕEstournelles on his 1909 visit to the university. Estelle Porter, later Christin (1888 Ð ?), was also affiliated with Stanford. She graduated from the school in 1911.
