Octavo. Bound in publisher's original salmon wraps printed in black. Two issues. Plates, frontis color plates by Pierre Bonnard & Marie Laurencin tipped in. Usual oversized wrappers, else a very fine, pristine copies. The first appearance of this important Taos story, as a two-part serialization preceding its appearance in the CRITERION. Other notable writers and artists whose works appear in these issues are Jean Cocteau, Logan Pearsall Smith, Malcolm Cowley, A. E. Coppard, Waldo Frank, Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Demuth, Marianne Moore, et al. From September 1920, until July 1929, the last issue of THE DIAL, thirty of Lawrence s works appeared in twenty-five issues of this brilliant magazine founded by Scofield Thayer. THE DIAL affected the course of Lawrence s later life. Thayer induced Lawrence to write Sea and Sardinia; Mabel Dodge Sterne (later Luhan) read Sea and Sardinia in THE DIAL, and persuaded Lawrence to come to America. Marianne Moore, Thayer's successor, unwittingly helped Lawrence get his final volume of verse, Pansies, past British postal censors." -- Joost & Sullivan, 1970. .
