First Edition."Women, Race, & Class" by Angela Davis is a monumental 20th century text that doesn't just explore, but altogether revolutionizes the study and analysis of gender, race, and class - specifically as it pertains to the feminist movement in the United States. Here, Davis essentially invents the idea of intersectionality in order to demonstrate how issues of race and class were often marginalized or overlooked in the discourse of second-wave feminism. Davis contests that the struggles of women cannot be fully understood without understanding the intersections of race, class, and gender. For example, Davis argues that Black women face both racial and gender-based discrimination, which is significantly different from the experiences of white women. In light of this, Davis presents this work as a counter to the well-meaning, but ultimately exclusive and short-sighted works, written by white feminists. Offering a historical view, she provides a solid history of the feminist movement, but adds to this a focus on the contributions and history of black women and black feminism. Because of the rigor and depth of Davis's scholarship and the well-articulate urgency of her message, this work has become absolutely integral to today's discourse on social justice. The idea that identity and oppression are interlinked, and that identity is always multiple, can be essentially traced back to this book.
