Folio (approx 41cm x 28cm) : pp. [2] 5 (text) 8 colour plates (4 apiece) tipped onto card and interleaved with captions : original black paper wraps lettered in white and ochre : in faint pencil to the tail of the title someone has noted , "Dame Laura Knight has just died at the age of 92. 1970". Slight rubbing at spine, some edgewear and creasing to wraps; paper repair to the fore edge of the title page; some foxing to the text and card mounts, the plates are clean and bright. Laura and Harold Knight were central figures in the Newlyn artists colony alongside Lamorna Birch, Alfred Munnings and Aleister Crowley, from 1907 until the end of the WWI. During this time Laura's style became more impressionistic and The Beach, painted in 1908 (and in thisfolio) was widely admired both by other artists and the public. Laura Knight's work was so popular she became a household name by the mid-1920s and was the first female artist to made a Dame of the British Empire in 1929. Her reputation later languished, but there has more recently been a reassessment of her legacy, especially by feminist writers. (See "Dame Laura Knight: the artist who declared, 'I paint today'", Christies online, November 24, 2022). A scarce item. Seller Inventory # 3051
