Presumed one of only four copies made. Stated First edition, first printing, January 1989. Velo-bound. Light soiling to head of title page and some spotting on fore-edge of textblock, else clean and unmarked. Approximately 380 leaves, printed on rectos only. 11 x 8.5 inches. Three copies noted on OCLC (Wheaton, Marquette, Bowling Green). Volume V and VII of Paul Nolan Hyde's extensive Tolkien glossary, originally published in seven volumes. Unfortunately, here we have only this single volume, covering the letters N through R. Based on the author's statement in the preface, it appears to be one of the very few copies he made, as the first edition was: ''reproduced less times than Beren Camlost has fingers'' (Beren Camlost lost one of his hands). The glossary is presented as a compilation of morphological elements in the languages of Middle-earth, together with volume and page number where related information (such as language, root source, part of speech, translation, contextual information, and related words and derivations) are documented in the following works of J.R.R. Tolkien: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Book of Lost Tales, The Lays of Beleriand, The Shaping of Middle-earth, The Lost Road, The Return of the Shadow, The Road goes Ever On, The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Monsters and the Critics, and ''Guide to Names'' in A Tolkien Compass. Paul Nolan Hyde (1942-2021) was a professor of linguistics at Brigham Young University and a specialist in the Tolkien Legendarium. He authored Quenti Lambardillion, the Middle-earth linguistics column in the journal Mythlore between 1982 and 1992, and also contributed to Vinyar Tengwar, the journal of the Elvish Linguistic Fellowship. Tolkien's linguistics served as the subject of both his Ph.D. dissertation and his master's thesis: the 1200-page ''Linguistic Techniques Used in Character Development in the Works of J. R. R. Tolkien'' (Purdue, 1982) and ''A Descriptive Analysis of the Languages Used in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings'' (BYU, 1972).
