In Three Volumes. Volume III. Published in New York City by Williams and Whiting. 1810 first collected edition. 368 pp. 8.5” x 5.25”. 8vo. hardcover contemporary tree calf. As-is, with some scuffing and losses along edges and corners of boards. Front board mostly detached and held together with tape. Some chips and losses down spine. First end page detached and chipped along edges. Bookplate of John Davidson at front, along with additional markings from Arthur Eugene Bestor, Jr. Includes frontispiece of James Madison, with plate partially torn from top. Instances of staining, including remnants to title page. Darkening and some brittleness to corners of later pages. Infrequent instances of markings and marginalia within text block. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. VOLUME III ONLY. An extremely scarce first printing of Hamilton’s collected works, and only the third printing of The Federalist per Sabin. The third of three volumes published by Williams and Whiting six years following Hamilton’s fatal duel with Aaron Burr. The Federalist, a collection of 85 political articles written by Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, served as one of the most influential declarations in support of the ratification of the United States Constitution, with Hamilton writing 51 of the articles himself.
