Brown cloth hardcover boards with stamped designs and gilt lettering in the Victorian style; gilt page edges. Boards with moderate wear; spine edges torn; hinges weak and end pages soiled; pages dusty with light age toning. With 40 full page original illustrations. William Carleton (1794 - 1869]) was an Irish writer and novelist. He is best known for his Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry, a collection of ethnic sketches of the stereotypical Irishman. Carleton alienated the sympathies of many Catholic Irishmen by his accusations of gang violence, sectarian violence, and alcoholism among the Irish tenant class. He was in his own words the "historian of their habits and manners, their feelings, their prejudices, their superstitions and their crimes".
