Anyone who looks at a group of instrumentalists can see at once that some of the instruments have strings and are being played with a bow or plucked with the fingers; others are being blown and others struck, and some played from a keyboard. In this book we have deliberately adopted this very basic classification or way of grouping musical instruments--strings, wind, percussion, and keyboard-- because it is easier for a person who is not a trained musician to relate what he hears to what he sees, rather than take or trust something technical he does not understand. The intention of this book is to describe the chief classical musical instruments of the Western world; how they differ from each other and from some of their chief counterparts in the rest of the world; also how they came to be what they are today and their relationships with some of the world's folk instruments.
