Publisher's cloth, faded to brown, binding otherwise very good, 7 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches, tight. iv, [4], 691 pages, foxing. Has a folding hand-colored chart, "A Chart of History." "What is here aimed at is simply to indicate, in brief and suggestive terms, the succession of the prominent occurrences and of the governments in the chief nations of the world - enough merely to recall to the reader of history the full pictures of these events, and to enable him to classify them correctly in his memory." - Preface.The contents are Ancient History and Modern History (pp. 2-145); Dictionary of Dates (pp. 146-608); Literary Chronology (pp. 609-647); Heathen Deities, &c. (pp. 648-656); Biographical Index (pp. 657-691). George Palmer Putnam (1814-1872), b. Brunswick, Maine; d. New York City. Putnam entered the publishing trade in New York City in the 1830's. He was a partner in several firms before establishing his own in 1848. In 1852 he founded Putnam's Magazine, later merging it with Scribner's Monthly. His publishing firm was extremely successful and remains today as part of the Penguin publishing group. He strong interest in art led him to become one of the founders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; he was the author of several books on history, biography, and reference.
