Wangarie is a blue flyer kangaroo, a female of the red kangaroo species. She and the members of her small travelling band, including Old Man Red, an ageing giant of a buck, and Merloo, her male offspring, scour the western plains of Australia in search of food. The drought that has ravaged their land has made nourishing green sprouts scarce and hence precious to the many animal species that inhabit the area. As the marsupials make their way across the plains, they encounter troublesome natural predators, such as wild dogs and foxes; carcass hunters who want the animals' skins for furs and their meat for pet food; and hostile sheep and cattle herders who feel the 'roos have reached pest proportions and should be thinned out drastically.
In the same vivid detail that H. D. Williamson evokes the kangaroos' responses to recurrent dangers, he describes the daily lives of these curious pouched animals. We learn about their extraordinary hopping skills - they reach speeds of sixty kilometres per hour and can clear a three-metre fence from a standing start -, how a female gives birth and carries a young "joey" in her pouch for the better part of a year, and how the kangaroos' intense curiosity makes him linger in situations when he should flee.
The Year of the Kangaroo is an entertaining and often eloquent story about Australia's most famous inhabitants, but it is also an informative and thorough account of their precarious position in the Australian wilderness.
